RESEARCH
6 participants completed a photo diary over a period of 5 days, capturing where they put their belongings immediately upon entering their homes. They each filled out a follow-up questionnaire, and 4 separate participants completed a longform questionnaire. I conducted homevisit interviews with 3 additional participants. Upon analysis, I made three distinct observations.
“I put things on any available space in my room”
OBSERVATION 1
many people use similar spots for their belongings everyday, but they are often make-shift, not permanent solutions, and create disorder or will require those things to be moved to another place
“I put my backpack close to my room door. I hang my keys on a wall. I will hang my purse on the door hanger. I put my shoes by the front door”
OBSERVATION 2
designated storage spaces are often for a singular item and may be located in different places, complicating and prolonging the process of coming and going
“I feel frustrated and sometimes panicked, especially when it’s something important and I’m leaving in a hurry”
OBSERVATION 3
several people struglle with clutter around the home and frustration due to misplacement of the things they need
to leave the house as they end up in random places
how might we create a storage solution for traveling belongings that frequently go in and out of the huose which allows a user to put them in the same place every time to create organization and establish routine to make the process of coming and going easy and efficient?

IDEATION -
I tested 3 distinct designs with several users, including some of the research participants. They gave varied constructive feedback and I evaluated each design based on ease of use, universal aesthetic, and production process.
CONTAINER + HOOKS + LANDING PAD
I needed to combine a shallow container, different hook sizes, and a “landing pad” surface. I continued to model in CAD to create flat patterns used to laser cut and score foam core which I folded into scale prototypes. I tested different wood attachments and slight variations in form.
